A little prep goes a long way. Here's everything you need to know before, during, and after your spray tan for the most beautiful result.
Before Your Tan
Getting ready.
The day before
✓Wax and shave the day beforeNot the day of. Do not use razors with moisture strips. Exfoliate with a mitt or glove, and stay away from body scrubs as most leave a residue.
✓Beauty treatments firstYour sunless tan should be the last beauty appointment on your list. Complete all mani/pedis, facials, and massages the day prior.
The day of
✓Shower rulesAvoid bar soaps and Dove. These leave a residue that creates a barrier and may cause streaks. Use a gel-based, sulfate-free body wash, and shower 4 hours prior. If you must shower closer, do a cold rinse.
✕No barriersAvoid any lotions, oils, deodorants, perfumes, or makeup the day of your tan. All of these create a barrier that the tan will not adhere to.
✓What to wearWear, or don't wear, whatever you're most comfortable with for your session. Afterward, dark loose-fitting clothing and sandals. Avoid anything tight.
After Your Tan
Making it last.
Until you rinse
✕Stay dry and comfortableDo not get wet or sweaty. Stay in loose, dark clothing. No showering, working out, lotions, or makeup until after your initial rinse.
✓Your first rinseRinse in warm water at your recommended time for natural-looking results. Do not use soap. If you see streaks after rinsing, hop back in and use your hands to gently rinse off any residual bronzer.
The week after
✓Shower tipsAvoid loofahs or wash cloths for the duration of your tan. A gel-based, sulfate-free body wash is best. No Dove, bar soaps, or exfoliating products. Shave only when necessary. Gently pat dry.
✓Moisturize dailyHydrated skin equals longer lasting results. Your lotions should be free of mineral oil. Moisturize twice a day and stay hydrated.
✕Activity checkAvoid a lot of swimming, hot showers or baths, and saunas. Your sunless tan will not last long with these. Wear a lotion-base, water-resistant sunscreen.
